TENCEL lyocell is not wrinkle-free, but it creases less than linen and, in everyday use, about as much as a good cotton sheet. Most of the creases people notice on eucalyptus TENCEL sheets come from how they are washed and dried rather than from the fabric itself: a crowded drum, high heat, or a load left sitting in the machine. Wash cold, dry low, take the sheets out promptly and smooth them onto the bed, and they stay smooth with very little effort. This guide explains why TENCEL creases, how it compares with other fabrics, and how to keep our eucalyptus TENCEL sheet sets looking neat.
Why TENCEL sheets crease
TENCEL lyocell is made from eucalyptus wood pulp spun into long, smooth fibres. Those fibres are very good at taking up moisture, which is why the fabric feels cool and dry at night. The same quality explains most creasing: while the fabric is wet, the fibres are softer and hold whatever shape they are pressed into. When a wet sheet is twisted in a full drum or left bunched in a basket, it dries into those folds.
Heat sets the folds in. A hot dryer cycle, or a sheet left in a warm drum after the cycle ends, presses the creases into the fabric the way an iron would. That is why the same set of sheets can come out looking crisp one week and crumpled the next: the fabric is the same, and the wash day is different.
How TENCEL compares with other fabrics
| Fabric | How much it creases | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Linen | A lot | The rumpled look is part of its character |
| Cotton | Some | Less with a sateen weave; percale often needs ironing for a crisp finish |
| TENCEL lyocell | Some | Creases mostly come from drying; smooths out easily on the bed |
| Polyester | Little | Resists creasing but traps heat and does not breathe as well |
Sheets sold as wrinkle-free are usually treated with a chemical finish that holds the fabric flat, and that finish can wash out over time. A natural fibre that creases a little is normal, and it is not a sign of poor quality. For a fuller comparison of how these fabrics feel at night, see which sheets sleep coolest.
How to keep TENCEL sheets smooth
Almost all of the work happens on wash day. These steps keep creases from forming in the first place.
- Do not overload the machine. Wash a sheet set on its own, or with a duvet cover at most, so the fabric can move freely instead of twisting into a rope.
- Wash cold on a gentle cycle. Our sheets are made to be machine washed cold. Cold water is kinder to the fibre and also protects the size of the sheets; most shrinkage comes from hot washes.
- Skip fabric softener. It coats the fibre and dulls the smooth surface that makes TENCEL feel the way it does. The fabric is soft without it.
- Shake each piece out before drying. A good shake loosens the folds from the spin cycle and takes a few seconds per sheet.
- Tumble dry low. Low heat dries the sheets without pressing creases in. There is more on settings in our guide to drying TENCEL.
- Take them out as soon as the cycle ends. This is the single biggest difference. Sheets left in a warm drum set into whatever shape they landed in.
- Put them straight on the bed, or fold them warm. Smoothing a slightly warm sheet across the mattress finishes the job. If they are going in the cupboard, fold them while still warm; here is how to fold a fitted sheet neatly.
Line drying works well too. Hang the sheets straight, pegged at the hems rather than folded over the line, and the weight of the fabric pulls most creases out as it dries.
How to get creases out
If the sheets have already creased, there is no need to wash them again.
- Make the bed and smooth it. A fitted sheet pulled taut over the mattress loses most creases on its own within a night, and our deep 18 inch pockets keep it held flat on mattresses up to 20 inches deep.
- Mist and smooth. Lightly mist a creased flat sheet or duvet cover with water once it is on the bed and smooth it with your hands. It dries flat.
- Use steam. A handheld steamer works well on a duvet cover once it is on the duvet. Hanging a pillowcase in the bathroom during a hot shower does the same for small pieces.
- Iron cool to medium. If you like a pressed finish, iron while the fabric is slightly damp, on a cool to medium setting. Avoid a hot iron, which can leave a shine on the surface.
Duvet covers and pillowcases
A duvet cover creases less once it is on the duvet, because the insert holds it out. Our eucalyptus TENCEL duvet cover sets have eight corner loops that tie to the duvet's corners, so the insert stays spread out and the cover stays taut. Washing a cover follows the same steps as the sheets; this guide covers the cover and the insert. Pillowcases crease mostly from sleep itself and smooth out once they are back on a pillow.
Storing sheets so they stay neat
Fold sheets while they are warm and store them loosely rather than packed tightly into a shelf, which presses in hard folds. Keeping each set together, with the flat sheet and pillowcases tucked inside the folded fitted sheet, also saves hunting for pieces. Rotating two sets keeps both in good condition, because each one rests between washes.
Questions people ask
Does TENCEL wrinkle more than cotton?
In everyday use, about the same. A crisp cotton percale often shows more creases straight from the dryer, while a cotton sateen shows fewer. TENCEL sits in between and smooths out easily once it is on the bed.
Can you iron TENCEL sheets?
Yes, on a cool to medium setting, ideally while slightly damp. Most people find they do not need to, because taking the sheets out of the dryer promptly does most of the work.
Do TENCEL sheets wrinkle less over time?
They soften with washing, which makes them drape more and hold creases less. Hot washes and high heat do the opposite over time, so cold and low keep them at their best.
Are TENCEL sheets worth it if they are not wrinkle-free?
For most people, yes. What TENCEL offers is a cool, dry feel at night and a smooth surface on skin and hair, without the chemical finish that wrinkle-free sheets rely on. If the creases bother you, the steps above keep them to a minimum. For the full picture, including the downsides, see the disadvantages of TENCEL.
