What Is the Softest Duvet Cover Material? Fabrics Compared

on

The softest duvet covers are made from long, fine, smooth fibres: TENCEL lyocell, silk and long staple cotton in a sateen weave all feel soft against the skin. Microfiber feels soft in the shop but sleeps warm, flannel feels soft and cosy but only suits cold nights, and linen and cotton percale feel crisp rather than soft. If you want a cover that is soft to the touch and still comfortable on a warm night, TENCEL lyocell is the one to look at. This guide compares each material, explains what makes a fabric feel soft, and covers what else matters when you choose a duvet cover.

What makes a duvet cover feel soft

Soft is really two feelings. The first is smoothness: how easily the fabric glides over your skin. Fibres with a smooth, even surface feel slippery and soft, and fibres with a rough surface or many short ends feel scratchy. The second is drape: how the fabric falls and settles around you. A cover that drapes follows the shape of the duvet and your body, and one that is stiff holds its own shape and feels crisp.

The fibre decides most of this, and the weave decides the rest. A sateen weave floats more yarn on the surface, which feels smooth and drapes well. A percale weave crosses the yarns one over one, which feels cool and crisp. Brushing raises the surface into a nap, which is how flannel gets its fuzzy softness.

Duvet cover materials compared

Material How it feels At night Care
TENCEL lyocell Smooth, cool to the touch, drapes well Breathable and moisture-wicking, comfortable in most seasons Cold wash, low tumble dry
Silk Very smooth and light Comfortable, but slippery on a duvet Delicate, often hand wash or dry clean
Cotton sateen Smooth with a soft sheen, heavier Can feel warm on hot nights Easy, softens with washing
Cotton percale Crisp and matte Cool and airy Easy, creases readily
Microfiber Soft and smooth when new Traps heat and moisture Easy, but pills over time
Flannel Fuzzy and cosy Warm, best for cold rooms Sheds and pills with washing
Linen Textured, softens with age Very breathable Easy, creases a lot

Why TENCEL lyocell feels so soft

TENCEL lyocell is made from eucalyptus wood pulp spun into long, even fibres with a smooth, round surface. There are few loose ends to catch on skin, so the fabric glides rather than rubs, and it drapes over a duvet instead of standing stiffly on top of it. Many people describe it as cool to the touch, and that is the second part of why it feels soft: the fibre takes up moisture readily, so it does not feel clammy or sticky on a warm night the way a synthetic cover can.

It also stays soft. TENCEL does not need a chemical softening finish to feel smooth, so there is nothing to wash out, and it tends to soften further with gentle washing. For how it holds up over the years, see how long TENCEL bedding lasts.

Soft and cool, or soft and warm?

The right soft cover depends on how you sleep. Hot sleepers, and anyone who uses a heavy duvet all year, are better off with a soft cover that breathes, such as TENCEL lyocell or a light cotton sateen, because the duvet already provides the warmth. People who sleep cold in a cool room may prefer the brushed softness of flannel in midwinter and a smoother cover the rest of the year. Microfiber is soft and inexpensive, but it holds heat and moisture, which is why it often feels great at bedtime and stuffy by morning.

Remember that the cover is only part of the bed. The insert does most of the warming, and the difference between a duvet, a comforter and a bedspread changes how a cover feels; this guide explains the difference.

What else to look for in a soft duvet cover

  • The right size. A cover that is too big bunches up and a cover that is too small compresses the duvet, and both feel worse than the fabric deserves. Our covers are Queen (90 x 94 inches) and King (106 x 94 inches); this size guide shows how to match a cover to an insert.
  • Corner ties or loops. Loops that tie to the duvet's corners keep the insert spread out, so the cover lies flat and smooth instead of twisting inside. Our eucalyptus TENCEL duvet cover sets have eight.
  • A closure you cannot feel. Hidden buttons keep the opening closed without a zip that can scratch or snag.
  • Certification. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 means the fabric has been tested for harmful substances, which matters for something that sits close to your face all night.
  • Easy care. A cover you can machine wash cold and tumble dry low will be washed more often, and a clean cover feels softer.

How to keep a duvet cover soft

Most covers lose their softness in the laundry rather than on the bed. Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle, with the cover turned inside out and the buttons done up, and keep towels and jeans out of the load. Leave out fabric softener, which coats the fibre and dulls the smooth surface, and tumble dry on low, taking the cover out as soon as it is dry. This guide covers washing the cover and the insert.

Questions people ask

Is TENCEL softer than cotton?

Most people find TENCEL lyocell smoother and more fluid than everyday cotton, and comparable to a good long staple cotton sateen. It also feels cooler on the skin, which cotton sateen does not.

Is microfiber softer than TENCEL?

Microfiber can feel softer in the hand when it is new, because the fibres are very fine. It does not breathe like TENCEL, though, so it often feels warm and slightly sticky overnight, and it pills with washing.

Does a duvet cover get softer with washing?

Natural fibres usually do, as long as they are washed gently. TENCEL, cotton and linen all soften over time. Hot washes, high heat and bleach work the other way.

What is the softest duvet cover for hot sleepers?

TENCEL lyocell. It is smooth and drapes like silk, but it is breathable and moisture-wicking, so it stays comfortable when the room is warm.

Every ArthCrafted duvet cover set comes in Queen and King, with a duvet cover and two pillowcases in 100% eucalyptus TENCEL. To match it with sheets in one go, see the bedding bundle. Shop eucalyptus TENCEL duvet cover sets.
