Woven TENCEL lyocell has very little stretch. It holds its shape well, so sheets and duvet covers made from 100% TENCEL do not bag out or grow looser over time the way a knit fabric can. When you see TENCEL described as stretchy, it is almost always a blend: TENCEL clothing that stretches has elastane added, or it is knitted rather than woven. This guide explains why woven TENCEL keeps its shape, how it compares with other bedding fabrics, and how our eucalyptus TENCEL sheet sets stay snug on the mattress without stretchy fabric.
Why woven TENCEL has little stretch
Two things decide how much a fabric stretches: the fibre and the way the fabric is made. TENCEL lyocell is a strong, even fibre that does not give much when it is pulled. Bedding made from it is woven, which means the yarns cross over and under each other at right angles and lock one another in place. A woven fabric only gives a little, mostly on the diagonal.
Knitted fabrics are different. Jersey, the fabric of a T shirt, is made of interlocking loops that open up when you pull them, so it stretches whatever fibre it is made from. That is why a jersey sheet feels stretchy and a woven TENCEL sheet does not.
What about stretchy TENCEL clothing?
TENCEL is popular in jeans, leggings and T shirts, and many of those do stretch. The stretch comes from elastane, also called spandex, blended in with the TENCEL, or from a knitted construction. Check the label: a garment that lists only TENCEL lyocell and is woven will feel much like our bedding, smooth and fluid with little give. Our sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases are 100% eucalyptus TENCEL lyocell, with no elastane in the fabric.
Does TENCEL stretch out over time?
No. A woven TENCEL sheet does not slowly loosen with use the way a knit can. What changes a sheet's size is heat, not wear. Like most fabrics made from plant fibres, TENCEL can tighten slightly in a hot wash or a hot dryer. This guide explains how to stop TENCEL shrinking, and the short version is to wash cold and dry low.
TENCEL is softer when it is wet, so treat it gently on wash day. Do not wring sheets out, and when you line dry them, spread the weight over the line rather than hanging a heavy wet sheet from one corner. Handled this way, the fabric keeps its shape and its size.
How TENCEL compares with other bedding fabrics
| Fabric | How much it stretches | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Jersey knit | A lot | Looped construction opens up when pulled, and can bag out over time |
| Blends with elastane | A lot | Elastane is added to give stretch and recovery |
| Microfiber | Some | Fine synthetic yarns give a little in a loose weave |
| Bamboo viscose | Some, more when wet | The fibre is weaker wet, so it can lose shape if washed roughly |
| Cotton percale | Little | A tight, plain weave that holds its shape |
| TENCEL lyocell, woven | Little | A strong, even fibre in a woven fabric; keeps its shape wash after wash |
| Linen | Very little | Long, stiff fibres with almost no give |

How a TENCEL fitted sheet stays snug
Because the fabric itself does not stretch, a good fit comes from the cut. Our fitted sheets have 18 inch deep pockets that wrap well under the mattress, and corner straps that hold each corner in place. Together they fit mattresses up to 20 inches deep, topper included, and keep the sheet smooth and taut through the night.
Two quick checks before you buy: measure your mattress depth including any topper, and confirm whether you need Queen or King. Our Queen and King sheet size guide lists the measurements.
How to keep your sheets fitting well
- Wash cold. Cold water keeps the fibre stable and the sheet at its original size.
- Tumble dry low and remove promptly. High heat is what tightens plant fibres. Our guide to drying TENCEL covers the settings.
- Put the fitted sheet on corner to corner. Start with one top corner, then the diagonal bottom corner, then the other two. Pulling one side hard across the mattress puts strain on the seams.
- Store it folded, not stuffed. A neatly folded sheet comes out smooth and ready to fit; here is how to fold a fitted sheet.
- Skip bleach and harsh detergent. Both weaken the fibre surface over time.
Duvet covers and pillowcases
The same stability helps the rest of the bed. A eucalyptus TENCEL duvet cover keeps its size wash after wash, so it stays matched to the insert, and eight corner loops stop the insert from sliding around inside. Our pillowcase pairs close with a deep envelope rather than a zip or elastic, so there is nothing to wear out or lose its grip.
Questions people ask
Is TENCEL stretchy?
Woven 100% TENCEL lyocell is not. It has a little give on the diagonal, like most woven fabrics. TENCEL that stretches is knitted or blended with elastane.
Does TENCEL stretch when it is wet?
It is softer when wet, so it can be pulled out of shape by wringing or by hanging a heavy wet sheet from one point. Spread it out to dry and it keeps its shape.
Do TENCEL sheets get loose over time?
No. They do not bag out with use. If a fitted sheet ever feels tighter, a hot wash or dryer is the usual cause, and a cold wash routine prevents it.
Is TENCEL clingy?
No. It drapes close to the body, but it does not cling. Because the fibre holds a little moisture, it also builds up less static than synthetic fabrics do.
What else should I know before buying TENCEL?
It feels smooth and cool, and it asks for gentle care. This honest guide to TENCEL sheets explains what they are like to sleep on, and this one covers its disadvantages.
