What is actually in a bedding set?
There is no legal definition, so read the piece count rather than the name. These are the three common configurations.

Two points catch people out. A duvet cover set never includes the duvet, because the cover is a shell that goes over the insert you already own. And buying both sets leaves you with four pillowcases rather than two, which is not a mistake: it is the spare pair that lets you wash weekly without stripping the bed.
Which size do you need?
Size is decided by the mattress for sheets and by the duvet for the cover, and the two are not always the same answer.

Measure the depth of your mattress with any topper in place before you order. A standard 12 to 14 inch pocket will not stay on a pillow top or a mattress with a topper, and a fitted sheet that lifts at the corners is the most common complaint about any bedding set.
What to check before you buy
- Fibre, not thread count. Thread count measures cotton weave density and tells you nothing about lyocell. What the fibre does with heat and moisture matters more, which is set out in what TENCEL fabric is.
- Pocket depth on the fitted sheet, and whether the elastic runs all the way around or only at the corners.
- How the duvet cover closes and whether it has corner loops. Without them the insert migrates inside the cover no matter how well it fits.
- Certification. OEKO-TEX 100 means the fabric has been tested for harmful substances; ours is also ISO and Sedex certified for how it is made.
- Care instructions. A set you cannot machine wash weekly is a set that spends its life slightly dirty.
- Whether the colours are available in both sizes, so you can match a second bed later.
Is a bedding set better value than buying pieces separately?
Usually yes, for two reasons that have nothing to do with price. The pieces are cut from the same fabric in the same dye lot, so the whites match and the greys are the same grey; buying separately across seasons often means they do not. And the sizes are decided for you as a set, which removes the commonest error of a Queen cover over a King duvet.
Buying separately makes sense when you are replacing one worn item, or when you deliberately want contrast, such as a Bright White duvet cover over a Sterling Blue sheet set.
Building a complete bed, in order
- Fitted sheet on the mattress, deep enough for the mattress and any topper.
- Flat sheet over it, if you use one. It is the layer that takes most of the wear and it lets the duvet cover be washed less often.
- Duvet cover over your duvet insert, tied at the corner loops so it stays square.
- Pillowcases, one pair on the bed and a second in the cupboard.
- Anything decorative on top, which is where a contrasting colour belongs rather than on the layer against your skin.
Which fabric suits a whole set?
Whatever you choose is against your skin all night across four or five pieces at once, so the fibre choice compounds.
